The SpongeBob Musical

The pineapple under the sea is heading to the stage! The musical based on the SpongeBob SquarePants Nickelodeon cartoon originally hit Broadway in 2017. Presented by Chico State School of the Arts, this local production includes an original story by the TV series creator Stephen Hillenburg and features performances of iconic musical numbers from the long-running animated comedy, including Best Day Ever, along with hits from contemporary pop artists including BFF by Plain White T’s and music by John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie and more. Lorna Such with LabRats

Chico’s Lorna Such (shown here) has become a staple in local music circles. You may have heard her rich and powerful soul-filled voice with the band Lo & Behold, or channeling Amy Winehouse in recent shows, performing at an EP release party, or simply playing with several other very talented locals. This versatile singer-songwriter’s blend of groove, soul, and jazz continues to evolve as she cultivatesan audience in the indie-pop and jazz world. Joining her is LabRats, a crew of four who have taken over Sacramento in the jazz/soul/hip-hop scene. Sacramento News & Review introduces us to their unique style of jazz in Meet LabRats. A duo of Cali reggae acts is bringing good vibes to Chico as part of their Rise Up Road Trip Tour. Pipe Down (shown here) formed during the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic and leans a bit into rock and punk with their reggae sound. The quintet hails from the Lake Tahoe area, led by vocalist and guitarist Donny Beck. They released their album Lake in the Sky in 2025, and are making a return visit to the Commons. The show will also feature Lot 49, a San Francisco-based group that released the album Liquor and Coffee in 2024. This is a free, all-ages show. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Endangered Species Faire

The 47th annual event that honors all creatures of the natural world is back! Presented by the Butte Environmental Council, this community celebration blends education and entertainment. Festivities begin with a parade starting at the Chico Creek Nature Center and continue with interactive booths and classes. More than eight nonprofit and community organizations are expected to participate, including AltaCal Bird Alliance and California Trout. Classes will also be available from Wildflower Open Classroom. This free event also features live music performances by Emma and Will, Black Fong, and a local saxophone quartet. Read more about BEC’s endeavors in BEC continues to innovate. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style with a performance from this vibrant ensemble. Also known as Los C, the local group formed in 2012 by musician Jo Chavez, an eclectic performer who serves as the band’s frontwoman through vocals and keyboard stylings. Their music is a fluid mix of Latin cultures and sounds, including traditional Colombian pop, incorporating guitars, accordions, and Peruvian box drums known as cajóns. This is a free, family-friendly event. Chavez and the band are a regular presence at Chico festivals, including the Chico ART Festival, California Nut Festival, and many popular venues.
