The Marvelous Wonderettes

Thur August 7–Sun August 24; Thursday, Friday, & Saturday 7:30pm; Sundays 2:00pm
Chico Theater Company
166 Eaton Road
The Marvelous Wonderettes opened Off-Broadway in 2008 and has been a popular musical in regional theaters ever since. Celebrating the girl-group sounds of the 1950s and 1960s, it tells a light-hearted, nostalgic story centered on friendship, love, growing up and reconciliation. Chico audiences might remember Cindy Lou, Missy, Suzy, and Betty Jean as this revival returns to CTC after its 2013 staging. Tickets online are $31-$33. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

STRFKR with Mamalarky

Fri August 8, 6:30pm; Doors open 6:00pm
Sierra Nevada Big Room
1075 E. 20th St.
Sierra Nevada has booked another danceable night at the Big Room with these two bands. What started as a dis to fame, STRFKR stuck, with removal of the vowels (and c) from this band’s three-syllable name. Star Effer is one workaround pronunciation, but don’t let any of that get in the way of this Portland foursome’s indie rock, indie pop, synth‑pop and electronica sound. Expect cuts from their latest album Parallel Realms. Touring with them is the quartet Mamalarky (pictured here). Originally from Austin, Texas, their recent album Hex Key includes their signature indie rock with some blends of funk and dream pop. Tickets online for this all-ages show. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

FAYUCA

Sat August 9, 8:00pm
The Commons
2412 Park Ave.
What began as jam sessions between two Arizona high-school classmates more than 20 years ago, Fayuca evolved into a reggae-rock/Latino group, fronted by founding member, Gabo Fayuca. Today, the quartet tours nationally and internationally creating Latin rhythms with guitar riffs that blend with horns, bass, drums and vocals. This is their first performance in Chico. Free admission, all ages welcome. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

The Sand Gators, Ashley Jaguar and Bucko’s

Sat August 9, 8:00pm
Argus Bar + Patio
212 W. Second St.
A triple-bill of high energy on the patio. The Sand Gators (pictured here), fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Spencer Kilpatrick, deliver a sound described as a blend of Americana, soul, R&B and garage rock, with occasional psychedelic jam elements. Ashley Jaguar is a trio hailing from the Sierra foothills gold country on a return visit to Chico. They bring with them their danceable alt-rock with a bluesy, funk-tinged edge. Finally, mix Chico’s Brad DuFour with Reno’s The Happy Trails, and you get Bucko’s—a mash-up of garage-blues rock, with some soul and grit. Tickets cost $8.50, must be 21+. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Tricia & Peter Berkow — Keyboard & Bass Duo

Sun August 10, 3:00pm-5:00pm
Paradise Brew Werks Brewery
132 Meyers St., Suite 120
As performer and producer, the Berkow name has been on the Chico music scene for more than 40 years. From a fun, danceable pop-rock band to traditional acoustic, funk rock and spiritual vocals, versatility is an understatement. For a relaxing Sunday afternoon, Tricia and Peter get comfortable blending baritone and silky vocals with bass and keyboards to create their own distinctive, jazzy style. No cover charge for this event. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.
