Hot Buttered Rum

Friday, May 17, 7pm
Chico Women’s Club
592 E. Third St.
Presented by Chico Concerts

What’s a bluegrass party, exactly? Well, out here in the West, it’s evolved into a very Californian kinda bash. Hot Buttered Rum is a Nor-Cal staple, a familiar presence in the jamming-via-bluegrass-and-other-Americana-sounds scene at summer festivals and concerts in the many towns where that brand of “California soul” keeps dancers twirling—pale ales raised in appreciation—well into the night. The weather is is great, the evening breezes are divine, and Chico Concerts has this quintessential spring show on tap at the Women’s club tonight (May 17). Tickets: $25.

Roots and Routes: Latin American Perspectives

Shows through July 7
Museum of Northern California Art
900 Esplanade

The latest themed exhibit from the Museum of Northern California Art (MONCA) showcases artists from the Latino, Latinx, Chicano, Mexican and Latin-American communities of Nor-Cal. Roots and Routes is a multi-medium group show that “aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the differences and similarities that shape our experiences and identities.” The exhibit is up through July 7, and an opening reception is happening tonight (Friday, May 17) 6-8 p.m. More events and activities in conjunction with the show TBA. Visit monca.org for updates.

Divas through the Decades

Saturday, May 18, 6:30-10pm
The Barn at Meriam Park

If you want to support the Chico Housing Action Team, come out and party with a bunch of divas at the Barn on Meriam Park this weekend. The Divas through the Decades fundraising concert (Saturday, May 18) will feature divas singing rock, pop, country and jazz standards backed by Glenn Tucker and the Living Karaoke Band. Performers include local vocal coach and one of Chico’s favorite daughters, Holly Taylor (pictured in the above photo by Ken Pordes), plus Kelsi Judge, Leann Cooley and Lydia Cooley, Sierra Hall, Lise Welch, and another 10 local female singers. We won’t give away the set list, other than to say that songs by Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline are included, which is all you need to know. Tickets are $30 and are available on the CHAT site: chicohousingactionteam.net

KZFR Record Swap

Sunday, May 19, 9am-noon
Chico Women’s Club
592 E. Third St.
Presented by KZFR

KZFR community radio is billing this Sunday morning fundraising event as a “flea market for vinyl.” We’d add to that: “and a convention of music nerds” … or maybe “and a candy story for record junkies.” Local collectors will undoubtedly be on both sides of the tables as vinyl is scoured and sold and traded among devotees young and old. There will of course be vinyl spinning, as well as trivia and prizes and all the cool music folk chilling in one perfect spot, the Chico Women’s Club, Sunday, May 19.
