Comedian Dave Stone
Sierra Nevada Big Room
1075 E. 20th St.
Chico ex-pat DNA has become godfather of the comedy scene in Santa Cruz, and he’s coming back to town tonight (Thursday) March 21 via one of his trademark multi-act productions. Headlining the festival of funny at the Sierra Nevada Big Room is LA-via-Atlanta comedian Dave Stone, who splits his time between touring comedy clubs, appearing on late-night TV shows, voicing characters on Adult Swim’s Squidbillies and co-hosting a couple of podcasts. Also on the bill, comedians Tony Zavala (SF), Emma Haney (Sacramento) and Maryam Moosavi, and a live band! Tickets: $30-$45.
In-Flux: Recalibrating The Unknown
Museum of Northern California Art (MONCA)
900 Esplanade
It’s a bold move to promote an exhibit as showcasing the “power of art to reimagine and reshape our understanding of the unknown.” But boldness is the overriding vibe of the boundary-pushing SF Artists Alumni collective, and for the next couple of months they’ll be showcasing the “unknown” recalibrations of 180 artists at MONCA. Shows through May 12; opening reception Friday, March 22, 5-8 p.m.
Everybody Loves a Carnival
Chico Marketplace
1950 E. 20th St.
The big Silver Dollar Fair is a couple of months away, but if you are fiending for a funnel cake and a corn dog followed by being launched into the air inside a squeaky metal cage, the mall has you covered. The mini carnival is already all set up in the parking lot and continues through Sunday, March 24. Might as well go get your sea legs in preparation for when the Zipper, the midway and the All Alaskan Racing Pigs come for Memorial Day Weekend.
Local Nursery Crawl
After a week of glorious sunshine leading up to the first days of spring, the forecast for the annual Local Nursery Crawl—Friday & Saturday, March 22 & 23—calls for rain, which is perfect! It’s spring! It rains, it shines—all the things plants, trees and gardens love. Visit any one of the 15 participating nurseries in Butte County (get the list from the Instagram page @localnurserycrawl) and pick up a guide for the whole crawl. Visit six nurseries and receive entry into a raffle!
Comedian Eddie Pepitone
Gnarly Deli
243 W. Second St.
“It’s not fun! We’re in end times!” Funny right? If the world is going to hell, might as well have a laugh along the way. Eddie Pepitone is the Bitter Buddha, and like an even more cranky and dark Don Rickles, he brings an aggressively sharp wit to an act that takes the modern world to task. JT Habersaat, the “godfather of punk comedy” joins the fun downtstairs at Gnarly Deli, Saturday, March 23, 8 p.m. Tickets: $25.
Rosali (Merge Records) & Donald Beaman
Naked Lounge
118 W. Second St.
Jake Sprecher at Valley Fever productions has crafted a perfect pairing for the night with local opener Donald Beaman, whose music could be described in the same way Merge Records has headliner Rosali: “What might appear to be restrained, introspective compositions will stretch slowly outward, snagging your attention with a sideways guitar lead or an exceptionally raw lyric you didn’t catch the first time around.” Rosali has a brand-new album (Bite Down) coming out the day before the North Carolina-based singer/songwriter and her band perform at Chico’s Naked Lounge, Monday, March 25, at 7 p.m. Tickets: $12.
