Who’s got the funk? The Low Flying Birds do. This long-time Chico-based ensemble blends bluegrass roots with funk-driven Americana rock — a sound they’ve dubbed “newgrass.” Formed in 2012 and led by frontman Doug Stein, the band has become a staple of the NorCal live music circuit, known for high-energy sets and genre-bending jams. Chico fans may have heard their sound at Cheers Chico New Year’s parties and with packed downtown crowds during Taste of Chico, building a loyal following along the way. Tickets online, and also available without service fees at Pullins Cyclery and The Music Connection. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Full Cup–live music

Sun, April 5, 5:00pm-7:00pm
The Commons Social Empourium
2412 Park Ave.
This multicultural reggae outfit first emerged on the Chico scene in 2016 and has continued to evolve, now fronted by native Jamaican vocalist Tafari—an onstage moniker meaning “one who inspires awe.” The group has been building a following through local performances and has shared bills with fellow reggae act Junior Toots. Blending roots grooves with global influences, their sound leans into world music, a style they showcased recently at the Maker’s Muse Festival in Chico. The band also just dropped a new EP, Sunday Bricolage. This is a free, all-ages show. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.
