Local guitarist and Indigenous peoples advocate Yahmo Ahqua returns with his band to The Allies Pub, bringing their unique blend of jazz and blues. This frontman for Yahmo is joined by drummer Edward Barkus, bassist Emry LeRoy, and violinist Caroline Fairchild. The foursome also uses its musical efforts to raise money for charitable causes, including Park Fire survivors and local nonprofit Nor-Cal Resist. Ahqua says the band has made many positive changes in 2025. “We are ready for bigger shows… it’s exciting and a lot of work.” This is an all-ages event, no cover. Dysfunctional Comedy

We could all use a little funny right now. Local comedian Jessy James is again assembling the troops for a monthly laugh fest at Bidwell Perk. This time the show will feature stand-ups Joey Allen, Freeway Farrell, TJ Hudson, Thelonius Johnson and Roxanne Vitavec. Each one will give their take on what’s up and what’s crazy. From smooth blues to power rock anthems, six-member Cana Road Band has built a following in Chico’s local music scene, including with its cover of “Voodoo Woman,” originally written by Chicago blues legend Koko Taylor. The local band includes guitarists and vocalists David Sloggy and Ron Pope, bassist Mike Bassi, and drummer Darryl Smith. They are joined by husband-and-wife duo Steve and Sandy Masonek, who provide additional vocals, keyboards, steel drums, and the occasional harmonica. This is an all-ages event, with a $5 cover charge that goes directly to the band. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Broken Compass Bluegrass

Bluegrass with a touch of Grateful Dead is just what the quartet Broken Compass is bringing to town. The Grass Valley-based group started in 2021, becoming a highlight of the Northern California live music scene. No surprise, the members of the bluegrass band have been studying music from a young age. Guitarist and mandolin player Django Ruckrich received his first guitar at age 4, while fiddle player Mei Lin Heirendt became the concertmaster for Music in The Mountains Youth Orchestra at age 12. This upcoming show is an all-ages event. Tickets online, and also available without service charges at Pullins Cyclery and Music Connection in downtown Chico.
