Opening Reception—Many Views of Bidwell Mansion
& Enduring Landmarks

Reception July 11, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Exhibit July 10-24; Thursdays-Sundays 11:00am- 5:00pm
Museum of Northern California Art
900 Esplanade
These two exhibits share a theme. Bidwell Mansion, a site now reduced to a post-fire skeleton, is celebrated in this exhibition by 18 artists. Curated by local heavyweight Dolores Mitchell, “Many Views of Bidwell Mansion” presents a place that has inspired artists over the years—depicting it at night, in snow, freshly painted pink, and even in its ashen state. And for the juried exhibition “Enduring Landmarks,” artists responded to a call to reflect on the places that hold meaning in their own lives, whether from their hometown, childhood memories, or travels afar. As a Chico landmark, the Bidwell Mansion is one of those memories. If you can’t make it to this show at monca or simply crave more Bidwell Mansion, there’s also the “Remembering Bidwell Mansion” exhibit through August 29 at Art, Etc. in downtown Chico, during regular business hours on Tuesdays–Saturdays. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Swamp Zen & The Funnels

Fri July 11, 7:00pm; Doors open 6:00pm
Sierra Nevada Big Room
1075 East 20th St.
A Chico fave, Swamp Zen (pictured here) is a long‑running jam band known for their eclectic, dance‑floor‑filling style. They deliver that style via funk, soul-rock and jam-band improvisation (echoes of Grateful Dead). Plus, a few touches of reggae, jazz, country and techno. But pace yourself because first you get Chico’s own The Funnels, a band that will keep you on the dance floor all night. Tickets online $22.09- $37.93. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Black Pine Revival—live music

Fri July 11, 8:00pm-10:00pm
The Commons
2412 Park Ave.
Michael Russell, Grayson Katka, and Mike Waltz have been performing their Americana-roots rock ‘n’ roll locally, since 2023. Formerly known as the Michael Russell Trio, they’ve been touring with bands such as Electric Circus, The Tim Bluhm Band, Lo and Behold, and Hot Buttered Rum. Expect to hear some cuts from their recent album Dirt Angels Vol. I. Entry is free to this all-ages show. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Sarah Good, Holepuncher, Smally Big & Rumi Shimada

Mon July 14, 8:00pm; Doors open 7:00pm
Naked Lounge
118 W. 2nd St.
Four bands in the house. Chico local Maile Ariza (aka Sarah Good band) invites everyone on social media for a night of head banging. Not to confuse them with the more mellow vibed Canadian band of the same name, there still might be less banging and more head bobbing and twirling with the two guest bands from Sacramento. Rumi Shimada (pictured here) brings alternative/psychedelic pop to Chico, then continues north on tour. Smally Big blends jazz and electronic fusion, with some hip-hop influences. And the other Chico band, Holepuncher? Back to head banging. All ages, $10 at the door. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.
