Thurs Sept. 18, 7:30pm; Doors open 6:30pm
Chico Women’s Club
592 E. Third St.
As reported over the past 20 years in the CN&R, master harp player Mark Hummel has notched several performances here, each one different from the last. This time, he brings electric blues guitarists Junior Watson and Anson Funderburgh, who also add some vocals. Altogether, their collective talent is the All-Star Blues, and they’ve all performed with most of the blues and/or jazz legends that you can think of. Read more about them and get Tickets online, or available without service charges at Pullins and Music Connection in downtown Chico. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

The Play That Goes Wrong
Thurs Sept. 18 – Sun Sept. 28; Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7:00pm; Sunday at 2:00pm
Birdcage Theatre
1740 Bird St., Oroville
What happens when an unpolished, drama acting troupe thinks they have the chops to mount an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery play situated in a posh, 1920s British country manor? The Murder at Haversham Manor is written and staged by the fictional Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society. Most of the Birdcage Theatre cast is playing two roles—one as their character in the Haversham Manor play, the other, their true self as a member of the Cornley Drama Society. From the start, things unravel in this play within a play due to a series of mishaps, technical difficulties, and acting blunders. The test of their determination to carry on becomes a play celebrating theatrical resilience while delivering nonstop laughs. Tickets online or at the door. Thursday discounts. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Luke Sweeney, Scout the Wise, Flume Street Station
Fri Sept 19, 8:00pm
Naked Lounge
118 W. Second St.
Part troubadour, part rocker, this singer/songwriter from NorCal will likely mesmerize as he skillfully moves between pop, psychedelic rock and folk with soulful storytelling. Luke Sweeney’s (shown here) latest album Novel Tea, is described as “lush, playful, and experimental”. His first visit to Chico will include support from local singer/songwriter Scout the Wise sharing heartfelt lyrics with his indie pop/rock. Also, Chico’s Flume Street Station is a folk-indie-Americana trio that delivers rich harmonies while playing mandolin, guitar, and lap steel. Tickets: $10 at the door, all ages. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

The Stinkfoot Orchestra featuring Frank Zappa Alumni
Sat Sept. 20, 9:00pm; Doors open 8:00pm
Lost on Main
319 Main St.
The SFO was founded in the Bay Area in 2019, with a little stall from the COVID-19 arrival. The brainchild of conductor Nick Chargin who juggles all the musical pieces, it’s a loving tribute to icon Frank Zappa, whose music often defied genre labels: part rock, part jazz, part classical modernism and often bundled with satire and political commentary. Fronted by powerhouse vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock and including other Zappa alumni, this 14-piece orchestra just might blow the roof off. More band info and tickets online. Tickets also available at the DownLo, this is a 21+ show. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.

Sean Hayes and Black Pine Revival
Sun Sept. 21, 7:30pm
Argus Bar + Patio
212 W. Second St.

Expect a mix of both his reflective and some danceable tunes. Opening is local band Black Pine Revival bringing their Americana-roots rock ‘n’ roll to the stage. Tickets online or at the Argus Bar. Must be 21+. Check the CN&R calendar for more information.
