COLUSA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATIONCLASS TITLE: TEACHERJOB DESCRIPTION: TEACHER - DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING BASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent Special Education/SELPA, provides to individuals with hearing disabilities instruction that promotes cognitive, academic, behavioral, and physical development, and improves communication and language skills.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:Diagnose and program instruction for individual learners. EProvide instruction to individuals and groups of students. EPlan, administer, and interpret student evaluations. EPrepare written reports as required. EDevelop and maintain positive working relationships with parents and guardians. EMeet with parents on a regular basis to review student progress and work on individual education-related needs. EWork closely with other members of the program staff to develop and maintain curriculum and standards. ECoordinate transition plans for students moving to other environments. EWork cooperatively with personnel from the student's district of residence and/or outside agencies providing services to the student and family. EParticipate in professional growth activities such as conferences, classes, and staff meetings. EProvide training, direction and supervision for assigned ancillary staff. EMake or recommend appropriate modifications to make the classroom environment more appropriate for individuals with hearing impairments. EInstruct students and significant adults in the use of technological aids appropriate to the student's disability. EComply with rules and regulations established by California Education Code and Title V. EOther duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:KNOWLEDGE OF:Subject area and current instructional methodologies/techniques for teaching deaf and hard of hearing children.TEACHER - DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING continued ..page 2Characteristics of culture for families with members who are deaf or hard of hearing.Assessment measures for identifying specific areas of disability or need to plan effective strategies for instruction and services.Current technology available for modifying and/or enhancing learning capabilities.Manually coded English, ASL and/or SEE Sign Language.Applicable State and Federal rules and regulations.Computer programs and applications.ABILITY TO:Teach students of a wide variety of levels and age ranges.Use and instruct others in use of current technology.Work effectively with parents, community and education colleagues.Administer, analyze, and interpret a variety of assessment measures.Develop appropriate strategies, using assessment results, in collaboration with parents and other IEP team members Function as a positive, contributing member of an educational team.Display an understanding of deaf culture.Use a variety of sign systems to meet the needs of each child.Use appropriate and effective oral and written communication techniques.Maintain records on pupil progress and prepare required reports.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Valid California teaching credential with Deaf/Hard of Hearing authorization.Two years paid or voluntary experience working with individuals with disabilities.Experience with Specialized Health Care desired.LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license.Current CPR and First Aid certifications.WORKING CONDITIONS:ENVIRONMENT:Office and classroom environmentsMeetings, conferences and workshopsPHYSICAL ABILITIES:Sitting or standing for long periods of timeSeeing to observe students and staffDexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, including a computer keyboard and other technological devicesHearing and understanding speech at normal room level and speech on the telephoneDriving a car to sites and meetingsMoving from classroom to classroomHAZARDS:Contact with students with physical and behavioral problemsAugust 2006
