GENERAL SUMMARY: The Middle School Special Education Teacher is a member of the School's multidisciplinary team who, under the supervision of the Principal/Executive Director and Curriculum Coordinator, plans curriculum, assists in developing and implementing individualized student learning interventions, provides one-on-one and large/small group instruction, and performs all necessary record keeping. The teacher monitors, interprets, documents and assists the student in managing his/her behavior in accordance with School guidelines. The teacher may also assist the clinical staff by providing support. The teacher performs all duties in a manner that promotes positive team concepts. This is a regular, full-time exempt position. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS Under the supervision of the Principal and in collaboration with the Curriculum Coordinator, the teacher provides: a. One-on-one and large/small group instruction in assigned academic subject/s b. Researches and develops curriculum for his/her assigned subject areas. c. Helps to complete IEP eligibility evaluations and documentation as required. d. Provides educational assessments and testing, including pre- and post-tests for each subject area he/she teaches. e. Reinforces executive functioning/organizational skills consistently as part of the curriculum. Contributes to accurate documentation and record-keeping by: a. Correcting and grading students' papers in a timely fashion. b. Records grades. c. Weekly recording of each student's academic/behavioral progress. d. Maintaining all assigned program tracking forms including, but not limited to: progress reports, weekly homework sheets, communication logs, and student notation forms. e. Provides written information to Principal and/or Curriculum Coordinator as needed for IEP coordination and preparation for IEP eligibility reviews. f. All notes and reports are clearly legible, submitted in a timely fashion, articulate and pertinent to the students' academic/emotional/ behavioral/social growth. Must be punctual to all classes and in all student monitoring responsibilities. Serves as back up staff in activities or other classes as assigned. Contributes to the overall design and implementation of the educational program provided through the School. a. Attends and actively and openly contributes to all weekly staff meetings, in-service days, IEP meetings where attendance is compulsory, Back to School Night, Top God Event, Graduation Ceremony and other meetings as requested by Director. b. Works positively/cooperatively with co-workers through information sharing and consultation to promote effective education of students. Effectively manages the classroom while accurately assessing the needs of individual students and implementing behavior management strategies to respond to these needs. a. Provides coaching and social skill building strategies/activities based on a thorough understanding of the individual student's developmental needs, focusing upon present levels of performance promoting positive coping skills. b. Demonstrates creativity and flexibility in managing the milieu by collaborating with the teaching/clinical team. c. Addresses interventions using a consequence ladder that considers individual concerns and starts with the least restrictive consequences whenever possible. d. Strives to maintain a non-reactive and neutral stance in all interactions with students. Assures for the safety and well-being of all students by first consulting with team members whenever possible, communicating with family and then intervening immediately and appropriately. Assures professional growth by participating in staff development days, in-service days, teacher meetings, and by keeping abreast of effective teaching techniques. a. Attends continuing education programs as approved by the Principal. Participates fully in supervision: a. Is open, honest, and revealing regarding interactions with students, parents, and coworkers. b. Is consistently well organized and prepared for supervision, initiating questions and concerns. c. Is thoughtful and responsive to feedback and requests from supervisor. d. Communicates openly regarding difficulties or disagreements regarding feedback or requests. Consistently provides appropriate service to each student he/she serves taking into consideration the unique needs of that student. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: * Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications): * Preferred Master's degree in general education or Bachelor's and a minimum of three years full-time elementary teaching experience, (excluding student teaching and practicums), with ADD/HD and/or LD students. * Standard Teaching Certificate preferred. * Prefer Masters in Education with a Special Education Endorsement and/or Masters in Curriculum & Instruction, plus direct experience stated above. * Valid Oregon Driver's License. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: * Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of ADD/HD, ASD and LD students and the learning challenges students face. A familiarity of the diverse learning styles that are frequently demonstrated within classrooms serving LD students. * Thorough understanding of effective educational instructional techniques, especially multisensory delivery systems used to develop the academic potential of ADD/HD and LD students. * Preferred multi-subject elementary experience with expertise in Language Arts/Humanities. * Ability to be proactive in creating a calm and productive classroom environment and be non-reactive to provocative student behavior. * Ability to competently coach students and manage disruptive behaviors in a supportive yet neutral manner. * Strong verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to remain flexible when modifying educational curriculum, creating engaging learning and social activities, instituting behavioral interventions or providing emotional support for the ever-changing needs of our adolescent LD students. * Ability to maintain a neutral and supportive role with students who frequently attempt to test limits. * Ability to sustain continuous interaction with ADD/HD or other LD students who require consistent engagement, supervision and a high degree of patience.
