JOB OPPORTUNITY: COMMUNITY ORGANIZER for the N. Sacramento Valley:​ ​Susanville, Chico, Redding, Red Bluff
Summary​: A new 6 to 8-month position has opened for a community organizer based in the Northern Sacramento Valley for the Alternatives to Violence Project California (AVP/CA). This person will be tasked with building a local council to support Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops in High Desert State Prison, Susanville and in communities of the N. Sacramento Valley Region. They will continue to recruit participants for AVP Workshops from a pool that has ethnic, sexual identity, age, socioeconomic, and racial diversity. They will also continue to develop AVP’s existing community relationships and keep a record of these contacts to pass on to volunteers who will take over this role. The primary goal is to continue developing the local group of AVP workshop facilitators and volunteers who will continue to provide workshops within local prisons and in nearby communities and carry on the groundwork that has been laid towards developing a self-sustaining volunteer-run local council.

Competency Requirements​:
-Experience working with volunteers toward becoming a community
-Knowledge of the area and its resources, individual and organizational, and a commitment to
increasing this knowledge
-Knowledge of and comfort with the different cultural communities in the greater
Lassen/Butte/Tehama/Shasta area, their groups and organizations, and in speaking with
all segments of society
-Bilingual ability (especially English-Spanish) is desirable but not necessary -Creativity, organizational​ skills and ability to​ develop a team of local volunteers -Self-motivation and an outgoing and tolerant personality
-Writing, computer and telephone skills
-Ability to speak to groups about AVP with enthusiasm
-Community engagement skills to continue relationships with local organizations -Comfort with the prison aspects of AVP, although not all workshops are in prison -Formerly incarcerated men or women are most welcome
-Able to travel area-wide

Job Description​:
-Learn AVP from the inside by taking workshops.
-Work cooperatively in volunteer development process with present organizer
-Utilize the existing working list of agencies, media, and other resources to be contacted with
information about up-coming workshops. Keep this list up-to-date for future use by council.
-Using the contacts already made, meet one on one with people already interested in the program toward developing personal commitment, e.g. by taking workshops, donating money, and passing the word.
-Set up appointments and meet with individuals and organizations to explain the program and develop personal involvement and support.
-Recruit Basic Workshop participants; follow-up and recruit participants for Advanced Workshops and Training-for-Facilitator Workshops.
-Keep a list of potential attendees to follow up for future workshops.
-Track contacts and progress; fill out the necessary forms in relation to contacts.
-Submit regular progress reports to AVP/CA.

Position Details
-$15,600 -$19,500, depending on experience, for a six month period. (this would be pro-rated for the 8 month term)
-Benefits provided, including vacation/sick pay and Affordable Care Act contribution
-Will work out of own home, using own office equipment and vehicle.
-AVP/CA will provide a laptop computer, printer/scanner and cell phone for the duration of the position
-Proof of auto insurance must be provided
-Reimbursement for approved travel and office expenses
